The most humbling words are in verse one: “He saw.” He was watching. He is still watching. If you’ve never considered this truth before as you make pledge commitments or as you give to support God’s work, how would it make a difference in how you give?

DAY 14

Give Faithfully

My prayer partner from graduate school told me that God was leading her to send me a check each month for six months. I was thrilled. But I also knew that Teri didn’t have any money.

I was doing a non-paid internship in the Netherlands and really did need money badly. And then she told me the amount—twenty dollars each month . . . for six months.

What? Was that all? I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to tell her, “Keep your money; this isn’t going to help me with anything.” But I couldn’t. What do you say to someone who says “God is leading me” except “OK, thanks.”

So I received the first two checks and felt silly cashing them—like this was a ridiculous exercise. But they kept coming.

It started with the fourth check.

I began to change.

I began to connect with my Father in a way I’d never done before. I was humbled by her faithfulness. She wasn’t even embarrassed by the size of the checks. Ever.

God asked her to send checks for six months, so she did. No questions, she just obeyed. We both knew it wasn’t going to make a dent in anything. But she did it anyway. And the lesson was mine. I began to feel God’s unwavering love for me. His concern. His faithfulness through that tangible check each month. Through her faithfulness, He taught me faithfulness.

Then Teri’s story became mine.

God used that object lesson to model for me what He wanted to do through my life. When I returned home, He had me pick up where she left off.

First, He prompted me to give a few hundred dollars to a friend of mine for six months—every month for six months. That was hard. And it surprised me that it was hard. I realized that it was much easier for me to just write one check and be done with it. But to be in someone’s life for that period of time, well, that was a different story. So after the third month, I was beginning to feel that maybe I had given enough. But I remembered Teri—who was faithful with little. If she could do it, I could do it. I needed to be faithful. And I was. It was a huge accomplishment, me and God taking care of one of His kids.

The next six months of giving was to a man who volunteered at our church. He loved serving in the toddler area and faithfully served our three kids. He was injured and lost his job in the process. God prompted me again. Again it was for six months, but this time it was to give a much larger amount. My husband and I did. Another adventure. Another
